Do you know about Tohoku?

Tohoku is an area in the northern part of Honshu, and consists of six prefectures called Aomori,Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata, and Fukushima.  By riding the bullet train from Tokyo, youcan go to the southernmost point of Tohoku, which is the city Kōriyama, locatedin Fukushima. This only takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Tohoku area, with its luscious nature, paddy fields and mountains, may remind one of their childhood, and you can see the beauty of nature changing from season to season. The people from Tohoku still carry a lot of customs that they call their “folklore treasury”. Every region within Tohoku has their differences in cultures, customs and festivals, making it a very interesting place.

From their way of life, you can really feel that they are “one with nature”. Their culture, industrial arts, and cuisine have all come from nature. We do not want to lose this aspect of our culture that stems from nature, and we strongly wish that our traditions will always keep on being an important part of Tohoku’s culture. We really want to show these important parts of Tohoku’s culture to everyone.
